How to clean Venetian blinds

Venetian blinds are a popular choice for a window covering - they are easy to install and allow you to control the amount of light entering the room. However, like everything else, they will attract dust, and sooner or later they will need cleaning. Here's a quick guide on how to keep your blinds as fresh as when you bought them.

Remove stains

Check your blinds before cleaning for any sticky stains or other problem spots. If you find any, clean them off first with a mild detergent, and dry the blind with a paper towel.

Dusting

Put your blinds into a closed position, and then run over them with a duster. Do this systematically from top to bottom and start in the middle of the slats and move towards the edge so that you are not just moving the dust to the centre. You can use a cleaning spray, but make sure it is suitable for your blinds' material.  You could also use a soft cotton glove, and simply run your hands over the slats. When you have finished, close your blinds the other way round and do the same on the other side. This should give the blinds a thorough dusting all over.

Vacuum

As an alternative to dusting, you can also use your vacuum cleaner on your blinds. Again, you should close the blinds, and then run your vacuum cleaner over all the slats from top to bottom; then close them the other way and do the same on the other side. You should only do this if you have an upholstery attachment, however, as you may damage the slats otherwise. You should also make sure the suction is not so powerful that it might pull the slats out of shape.

Deep cleaning

Every now and then it is worth deep cleaning your blinds. The simplest way to do this is to take them down and put them in the bath. You should put a towel or rubber mat in the bath first to prevent any scratching, and then fill it with warm water so that it completely covers the blinds. Add a mild detergent, leave it to soak for half an hour (or longer if the blinds are particularly dirty) and then clean them gently with a soft brush.

With a simple cleaning routine, your blinds should stay clean and provide an attractive facade to your home.
